The two groups want different things from a dentist, and it is worth knowing which one you are. If you work in the Financial District, you are probably optimizing for weekday convenience: something close, something quick, something that fits between obligations. If you live here, you want somewhere that will still make sense on a Saturday morning and that can look after everyone in your household.

The area is well connected by subway, so a downtown practice is realistic for a lot of people who neither live nor work directly on top of it. Just be clear with yourself about how often you are genuinely willing to make the trip, because a treatment plan that needs four visits will test that assumption.

And know where the line is: facial swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, bleeding you cannot stop, or a serious injury means going to an emergency room, not waiting for a dental appointment.

Cosmetic work and specialist referrals

Cosmetic dentistry is heavily advertised in this part of Manhattan, and some of it is genuinely good. The questions to ask are the unglamorous ones. What does the procedure involve, is any of it irreversible, how long do results usually last, what maintenance will it need, and what are the alternatives including leaving things alone. Ask to see the treatment written down before you agree.

For specialist work such as implants, gum treatment, root canals or orthodontics, find out whether the practice does it in house or refers out, and ask where they refer to and why. A referral is not a sign of weakness. A dentist who knows the limits of what they do well and hands the rest to someone better placed is usually looking after you properly.
