Not sure what kind of dentist you need?
Pick what is on your mind. Most of the time the answer is a general dentist, and we will say so.
A general dentist
Routine care, fillings, and the person who refers you on if you need more.
Call a practice today, or go to an emergency room
Swelling that reaches your eye or throat, or bleeding that will not stop, is urgent. Do not wait on a web form. Most practices keep slots for emergencies.
An orthodontist
Braces and clear aligners. Many general dentists do simple aligner cases too, and usually cost less for them.
A pediatric dentist
Trained for children, including anxious ones and children with additional needs.
An oral surgeon
Difficult extractions, wisdom teeth and jaw surgery. A general dentist handles straightforward extractions and will refer the rest.
An endodontist
Root canals and little else, which is why the difficult ones end up there.
A periodontist
Gum disease and the bone under it. Start with a general dentist: early gum disease is treated with a deep clean, not surgery.
A prosthodontist
Replacing missing teeth: dentures, bridges, crowns and implant work.
A general dentist who does cosmetic work
Cosmetic dentistry is not a recognized specialty in the United States, so anybody may use the word. Ask to see cases they have done themselves.
Or pick a state
Every state, with what the federal registry lists in it.
Listings come from the National Provider Identifier registry, the public record every US dentist appears in: names, trading names, addresses, phone and fax numbers, specialties and other offices. Websites, emails and opening hours come from OpenStreetMap, open data under the ODbL, where a practice has published them there. Ratings are the ones patients leave here: we never copy reviews from Google or anywhere else. Details are factual and not always current, so confirm before you travel. A practice can claim its listing to correct it, add services, hours and fees, and receive patient requests by email. We never copy review text or photos from other websites.
