That convenience is genuinely useful, but it should not be the only thing you choose on. Booking around a working day

A dentist near your desk or your train is worth a lot if it means you actually go. Before you register, ask what a typical appointment length looks like, whether early morning or evening slots exist, and how much notice you need to give. Ask too whether they run to time, because a practice that is habitually late is expensive in a way that never shows up on the bill.

If your work pattern is unpredictable, say so. Ask about cancellation lists, how much notice you need to give to avoid a fee, and whether the practice can text you. And do not assume a same day slot will be there when you want one, here or anywhere else.

Do not choose on location alone

A five minute walk stops feeling clever the second you are arguing about a bill you did not expect.

Take ten minutes to read how a practice describes itself, then call and ask one or two real questions. How you are treated on that call is usually a fair preview of how you will be treated as a patient. If it is hard to get a straight answer before they have your money, it rarely improves later.

When something goes wrong suddenly
